Amazing vintage ads with great attention to the typography and layout. Aside from their great design, it makes me realize how much life and technology has changed. Time to pay homage to some great 50’s and 60’s advertising.

Designer Reserve Business Cards

bcard1

Designer Reserve business cards finally came in. The silk paper quality is amazing and the spot gloss on the back highlights the little details in the design. I’m very pleased with the final result.

Hummer H3 Ad

Hummer

"Family Portrait"

Designed by: Me

Design brief: To create a promotional piece to convey the smaller size of the Hummer H3 and show how it is more appealing to traditional families, unlike it’s larger the H2.

Solution:  a post card stock concept to emphasize the smaller size of the H3 vehicle. The classic traditional family welcomes the H3 into their lives with a family portrait.  This promotional piece is printed on post card stock and inserted into magazines, similar to that of subscription cards found in newsstand issues.

Death Cab for Cutie - Little Bribes by Ross Ching

Interesting music video,  directed by Ross Ching. A great use of typography and stop-motion graphics. The use of type is similar to the work of Stephan Sagmeister.

Comment from Ross Ching:

“For this video, I pulled out every time lapse, stop motion and live action camera trick that I could think of. It took me about 2 weeks. The goal was to create a fresh, new direction to take my work to. The Eclectic Series has fared well, but that was all in the past. It’s time to look ahead. Live action narrative is where I would truly like to be producing content, but on the internet, it’s just too difficult to stand out from the pack making movies with a video camera. Moreover, time lapse and tilt-shift (shot with a still camera) are becoming more and more prevalent on the internet. Therefore I spent weeks and weeks to come up with a new, original idea and landed on this concept. If you don’t count the camera equipment that I already had, I spent about $75 on the entire project. Mostly for gas and props.”

Opening a design consultancy: Chapter 1

During late December 2008, I sat with a co-worker during lunch at The Republic, a Thai restaurant located near my old FHM office. While waiting for the waiter to take our orders, it hit me all of a sudden that this year was about to end. What a crazy year 2008 was, I went being a Art director at a men’s lifestyle magazine to working at a fashion company. I never really imagined myself working in fashion.

Audi vs BMW

audi_vs_bmw

I’ve seen Audi Attack Lexus on TV. commercials for the past few months, very clever identity theft concepts, which were entertaining and tastefully done. Now Audi’s new billboard showing the Audi A4, directly targeting BMW saying “Your move, BMW”. BMW responded and placed a billboard close to Audi showing a M3 with the reply “Checkmate”. WOW, I’m left speechless, kudos to Juggernaut Advertising for a simple one-word solution to Audi’s challenge.

Illustrator: Marcos Chin

marcos_chin1

We’ve all seen his work, but a lot of us don’t know who he is. I actually found out the mystery artist while at AMC Loews Movie Theater; He oddly had a gallery in the top floor men’s restroom in 2003 (weird place I know, but I think its a deal AMC had with Lava Life, restroom part is still weird). Since then I’ve been following his work, I actually went as far as getting the master print used for production of the poster above, I didn’t want to take it from the New york subways, stealing is not in my nature. But back to Marcos, he’s won a few communication arts awards and other illustration and graphic design honors. Since everyone is familiar with his work but not the artist, even though they should be, I figured I’d take the time to credit him and his constant inspiration to many of us.

Jack of all trades, master of one

collaboration

Graphic design is a field with many subdivisions; people really don’t comprehend the extent of its variety. When I’m asked, “So what do you do?” and respond “Graphic design,” people normally follow up with, “So you do websites, print, logos?” later leading them to ask me for free labor, but that’s another Ricki Lake show.

Are designers really expected to be a master of every aspect of design?

Objectified Trailer

Objectified, a documentary by Gary Hustwit, known for the film Helvetica, is now screening across the U.S. on set dates. The movie documents manufactured objects from toothbrushes to tech gadgets and the creativity at work behind them. Designers influence the lives of so many people; to re-examine, re-evaluate and re-invent our manufactured environment on a daily basis, makes this film a must see.

Objectified is set to release spring 2009

Interview with James Jirat Patradoon

jjpatradoon

I recently came across the works of James Jirat Patradoon and it seems now I can’t surf the web without coming across his work. He is an amazing artist who brings so much life to his work. Patradoon’s gritty style is refreshing from all the shiny kid robot style art floating around the net (you know who you are, you hypebeast!). It would be great to see James pencil up a Frank Miller story, just wishful thinking.

He was recently interviewed by Design Federation. You would never guess he draws with a Wacom. Check out all the pictures and link to the interview.

Typeface inspired by comic books

comicsans

We all joke about it, avoid it, and some of us are guilty of using it. I came across a great article about the infamous font Comic Sans by typographer Vincent Connare; inspired from the comic’s “The Dark Knight Returns” and ‘Watchmen,’ and designed for Microsoft.
